Steven sat on the sofa, sitting next to his lovely wife. They were both waiting for Lucas to arive. It was almost curfew. When he heard the doors swished open. "Cutting it close, aren't ya?" Steven asked, with a big grin on his face.
“A little bit.” Lucas smiled at them. “Just slid in under the wire.” He sat down. “Thanks for letting me hang out.”
“We weren’t waiting up for you or anything.” Ella said with a smile.
"Waiting up for me? It's not that late, is it?" Steven asked, hoping he did not loose track of the time.
Lucas looked at his Dad and laughed. “I think Mom was talking about you two making sure I didn’t miss my curfew.”
“And you didn’t.” Ella smiled. “Lucky for you.”
"You were cutting it close." Steven pointed out to his son. "How far in life do you think you will get, if you are always pushing the limits of being on time?" Steven asked, coming down on his son a little bit.
Lucas thought about his question for a moment. “I suppose I should aim to be early instead of being on time to show I am responsible.” He really didn’t like this idea. He wanted to spend as much time with the kids his age as he could.
"Managing your time, will get you far in life. Trust me on this." Steven suggested to his son. He feared everything he was saying was going in one ear, and out the other.
“So when you say eleven.” Lucas replied. “It is really a trick and you want me home by ten thirty.”
"No I want you home by 2255 but no later than 2300 hours." Steven said, hoping his son understood. He was not trying to shorten his free time. But he needed to be back, when told too.
“Okay.” Lucas replied with a sigh. “I will be home by the time you give me.” He hadn’t been late but his Dad was making a point and he understood it.
"You were, that is not my point. My point is, dont always count on waiting til the last second. Things come up, that might delay you." Steven said to Lucas, trying to get him to see that life is not perfect, and you need to plan for that.
Lucas almost sighed but took a deep breath. “Okay, Dad. I’ll head home from now on leaving myself time to spare in case I get delayed on the way.” He understood what his Dad was saying and it made sense.
"Thanks, trust me its better to play cautious, then take the gamble." Steven suggested to him. There was times to take a chance, to gamble. Attendance was not one of those things.
“I got it, Dad.” Lucas said with a nod. “And when I leave home and start out on my own that will be useful for me.”
Someone is kissing up a little, Steven thought with a big grin on his face. "I'm glad to hear it."
Ella smiled to herself. She wasn’t entirely sure and in fact believed that while Lucas understood he really didn’t think it was necessary. He would learn the first time he was late getting home because he had procrastinated down to the last minute.
“What did you and Mom do while I was done?” Lucas asked, hoping to change the subject.
"Just boring adult stuff, you know old people stuff." Steven said, with a big grin as he winked to Ella. There was no way, he was going to tell Lucas what they were upto.
Lucas looked at them. “You aren’t that old, Dad. You and Mom should go out to dinner or see a movie or something. Once we leave, there isn’t going to be a lot to do.”
"I think we will be able to handle it son, but thank you for thinking of our wellbeing." Steven said, with a big grin on his face. It was nice to see a teenager think of someone else, other than themselves.
Lucas was glad they weren’t concentrating on him at the moment. “So when are we leaving? Do you know yet, Dad?” He knew it would probably be soon.
"Tomorrow if all goes according to plan." Steven suggested, and relieved that his son decided to move on with the conversation.
“Did they give you a good command staff?” Lucas asked him. He listened when his parents talked and knew that it was important to have one that worked well together.
"I believe so, hard to know for sure. Need to work with them a bit." Steven suggested to his son.
“Just like me.” Lucas replied. “Same school teacher different kids. Please tell me they aren’t all going to be ten.”
"What do you mean ten?" Steven asked. Was he talking about looks, about age, about class room size. He needed a little more information.
“What I mean is are there going to be other kids my age here?” Lucas asked. “Or are they going to be little kids?”
"I am being told a variety of children, unlike the some of the other ships. This ship will have families onboard." Steven said, with a big grin on his face.
“Variety.” Lucas repeated his fathers word. He was hopeful that meant at least someone close to his age. “We shall see.”
"I have no doubt more teenagers, will join the crew. More people are still boarding." Steven said, as he looked over to Lucas. He was trying to reassure him, there will be more fans.
“I’m looking forward to getting school started.” Ella spoke up with a smile. “I know you can’t wait.”
“Right Mom.” Lucas said with a sigh. “He didn’t mind the school work it was the making new friends part. The first few days would be more about what the other kids were like.”
"Well the good news is, this is a five year mission. They should not be going anywhere for the foreseeable future." Steven suggested to his son Lucas.
Lucas smiled at his fathers words. Five years would be a long time. “I didn’t think of that!” He was happy now.
"Well you should, because the only way your getting off this ship early is if you go to the academy." Steven pointed out to him, with a big grin on his face. They were stuck together.
“I want to be an engineer.” Lucas informed them. “But I am not planning on going anywhere anytime soon.” He was actually looking forward to this five years on the Lexington.
"It's a good profession." Steven said, as he looked to Ella. "I can see him making a fine engineer in Starfleet." Steven suggested to her, with a warm loving smile on his face.
“Yes.” Ella said with a smile. She looked at Lucas. “All we want is for you to have a career you are happy with.”
“Thanks!” Lucas grinned at them. He had changed his mind several times but this seemed like a good fit.
"I believe you could be happy with Starfleet. I can not speak for you, but I can say I have been pretty happy with my career." Steven suggested to his son.
“What if I choose a different path?” Lucas asked his father. He had every intention of joining Starfleet but he was curious what his Dad would say. He had a feeling he already knew.
"Your mother and I will support that, as long as you do not sign up with the enemy." Steven suggested in a playful manner.
Lucas eyes widened. “No way Dad!” Then he realized he was teasing him. “I want to join Starfleet, that is my plan.”
"Then what was the story, about a different path?" Steven asked. He was curious, to know what he meant by a path then. He was teasing about joining the enemy, but he knew there was a chance, he would not join starfleet.
“I just wanted to hear what you had to say is all.” Lucas replied. “I’m a kid I could change my mind a lot before I know.”
"Fair enough, I did too. Mom may never admit. Pretty sure she did as well." Steven said, with a big grin on his face.
“First career plan I had was a doctor.” Ella smiled. “There were a few more before I knew that being a teacher was my calling.”
“I’m glad I don’t have to think about it right now.” Lucas said with a grin. “I wanna take my time.”
"Doctor Bond, that brings back old days." Steven said, with a big grin on his face.
“We have come far.” Ella said in agreement, memories flowing through her. “As much as I have fond memories of the past I am looking forward to this journey.”
"We have, and I hope you have no regrets about the path we have chosen together." Steven suggested to his lovely wife.
“None whatsoever.” Ella said with emotion. “We are doing what we both love and are together.”
"Amen to that my love and son, soon enough you will get to make that decision. To choose your fate and push forward with it." Steven said, as the scene starts to fade away.
Lucas was glad he had lots of time before he had to do that. Right now he wanted to play the new game his Mom had bought him.
