Timeline: MD001 1205 hrs
1041 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure

April walked into the replicator. Her stomach started to growl. She was not looking forward to eating a replicated meal, but given her choices, she did not really have a choice. She did not want to meet the Captain or first officer on an empty stomach. She quickly replicated herself a meal, and started to approach the tables.

Hunter Mitchell sat down at the only table that wasn’t taken. He was both nervous and excited to be on the Lexington. Though he had not officially started serving he had gotten a look at the Engineering department.

There was not a lot of table options open. And she did not want to sit with senior officers, especially the captain. She did not want his first impression of her, was her shoving her face full of replicated food.

Hunter saw the woman looking around and smiled at her when their eyes met. “Please have a seat.” He offered. “I am not expecting anyone.”

"Thanks, me either. You saved me from having to eat with the brass of the ship." April said, with a big grin on her face.

“I understand that,” Hunter replied with a smile. “I was relieved this table was free and I didn’t have to sit with them.

"April Collins, nice to meet you." April said with a big grin on her face, as she took a seat right across from him.

“Hunter Mitchell,” he replied as she sat down and got settled. “I am glad to meet you as well.”

"So what do you do on the ship?" April asked, as she arranged her plate of food.

“I work in engineering,” Hunter informed her. “I am excited to get to work but that won’t happen until tomorrow.

"So your going to be one that is going to keep my engines purring." April said, with a big grin on her face. She was eager to take the helm.

Hunter laughed at her words. “Yes, you could say I will.” He liked her sense of humor.

"You will?" April asked, wondering if he got a little tongue tied.

“I will keep the engines purring,” Hunter smiled at her. “You could say I am an expert at it.”

April tried not to smirk, but he was adorable and funny. "Young and cocky, nice combo." She playfully said in a teasing voice.

“That pretty much describes me,” Hunter nodded with a grin. “I am never serious and I am confident in myself.”

April grinned. "You realized you just contradicted yourself, right?" She asked him, trying not to laugh.

“I did, didn’t I?” Hunter’s eyes lit up. “I am a bit excited for this assignment I guess it show.”

"I think we are all excited." April said, as she took a bite from her plate.

“When I got my notice I had to read it several times,” Hunter admitted. “It almost felt too good to be true.”

"You don't think you belong on the Lexington?" April asked, if she was understanding him correctly. It seemed like that was the response he was giving her.

“I belong here!” Hunter said with conviction. “I just was shocked at first is all!” He smiled. “It was like all my dreams had been answered.”

"You dreamed of serving on a constitution class starship?" April asked, a little surprised to hear him admit that. She liked the ship, but she did not wish or dream to serve on her. She was happy to serve on any ship.

“I was on a Starbase and frankly I was happy to be transferred to a ship,” Hunter explained. “Being a brand new one was a bonus.”

"This is my first assignment, straight out of the Academy. Never had the pleasure of working on a fancy starbase." April suggested to him.

“I wasn’t there long,” Hunter replied. “I was up for a transfer and My chief recommended me.”

She wondered why the Chief wanted him gone. Something was not adding up to her. She hated feeling that way, but her curiosity was starting to get to her. She thought that was a little rude of her, and she did not want to be that way. So with a raising of her glass, she said. "Here is to new beginnings." April said, with a big grin on her face.

“To new beginnings,” Hunter grinned. He was looking forward to serving here as well as having met one of the crew.

April clinked her glass to his, then took a sip. She had a big grin on her face. "Have you heard, when we might be leaving spacedock?" April asked.

“No,” Hunter shook his head. “Rumor is it will be soon but no definitive time or day.”

"I heard the same, I hope its soon. This ship needs to be out there in space. I am looking forward to the five year mission." April said, with a warm smile on her face.

“So am I,” Hunter agreed. “Just think of all the possibilities for exploration in that time.”

"I am trying too, think about them. I can not wait to meet a new race." April said, with excitement in her voice.

“And to walk where the Federation has never been,” Hunter nodded. “It is why we’re here.”

"Walk?" April said, with giggle to her tone.

Hunter grinned. “Walk on a planet, fly through new space. “ He paused. “But meeting a new species tops the list.”

"I know what you meant, but I had to take the moment to pick on ya a little bit." April suggested to him, with a warm smile on her face.

“I like your sense of humor,” Hunter confessed. “It is refreshing.”

"Thanks, my mother said it was going to get me in trouble." April said, with a teasing grin on her face.

“Life is too short to be serious all the time,” Hunter declared. “Better to live, laugh and enjoy it.”

"I could not agree more." April said, as the scene starts to fade away.

Hunter sat back and took a drink. He was hoping they had made a friendship and he would run into her again.
