Mission: S1, E0: We need each other.
Location: Bridge
Timeline: MD002 0850 hrs
1022 words - 2 OF Standard Post Measure

Steven was on the bridge, as he noticed Ensign Mitchell walking onto the bridge. "Good Morning Mister Mitchell." Steven called out, with a warm smile on his face. He was happy to see he was not the only person on the bridge.

“Good Morning, Captain,” Hunter replied with a smile of his own. “How is your day going, Sir?”

Steven wondered if he was an early bird, or just trying to impress his Captain on his first day. "Not bad Ensign, have you been bridge duty before today?" Steven asked, as he watched Hunter head towards the engineering station.

“I have not,” Hunter replied as he reached his station. “My first day on the bridge.” He wondered if his excitement showed.

Steven smiled, as he thought to himself that Hunter was just eager to get his first day started. "It's a good day to learn, we do not have anything planned this morning." Steven said, as he stood up out of his chair, and walked over to the engineering station.

“Just please don’t say nice and quiet, Captain,” Hunter replied with a smile. “I’ve always heard those are like jinx words if said by command on a starship.”

"Worried about a little adventure, are we Mister Mitchell?" Steven asked, as he hovered right next to the tactical station on the bridge. He could see the thrill and adventure in Hunter’s eye. He remembered a younger version of himself, having the same thrill of adventure. Nothing was more devastating than a standard routine mission to get in the way of adventure.

“No sir,” Hunter said quickly. “I was joking, Captain, we can handle what comes our way.”

"And so was I." Steven said, with a big grin on his face. "I think we are trying to figure each other out. I'll keep it simple, do your job adequately and we will be fine. Do it better, and you will be my favorite officer." He said, with a big grin on his face.

Hunter’s eyes lit up. “Favorite officer,” he grinned then. “I like the sound of that.” He was liking being on the Lexington already. Hunter was more laid back and it tended to get him in trouble.

Steven just smiled, clearly Hunter did not see that he was teasing. He had no favorites. He appreciated all crew equally. He decided not to comment on it. Instead he decided to focus on moving the conversation forward. "I am an easy man to please." Steven suggested to him.

“I believe you are,” Hunter nodded. “But if I may say so, Sir, I believe you also have high standards for the crew to do their jobs and do them well.”

Steven appreciated the honest statement from Hunter. He liked the fact that Hunter felt comfortable enough to give such a bold statement. He smiled as he went on to say. "Pretty bold, but accurate assessment of me." Steven said, with a big grin on his face. He then went on. "I hope in a way, we would all have those high standards."

“I haven’t met anyone on board who doesn’t,” Hunter admitted. “And we all should, I hope I come across that way, I always want to give my one hundred percent, if not more.”

"That will be hard to live up too. But hey, effeciency will always be a top priority at least." Steven said, with a big grin on his face. At least they can expect that.

“It won’t be easy,” Hunter acknowledged. “Especially with a diverse crew. Not everyone has the same mindset or sees what is important the same.”

"We all have one priniciple foundation, we all believe in the ideals of Starfleet, otherwise, why are we wearing this uniform?" Steven pointed out to Hunter.

Hunter thought for a moment and then continued. “I would hope that is true, Captain. And your right, they would need to have that or what’s the point?”

"May I inquire to why you choose a deep space assignment?" Steven asked, curious to learn why Hunter choose to do a five year mission.

“I want to explore,” Hunter replied. “I want to be a part of meeting new species and possibly finding new civilizations.” He looked at the captain. “As well as keeping our universe in balance.”

"Those are both good goals, and goals I share in common with you. I think we will get a long just nicely Mister Mitchell." Steven said, with a big grin on his face.

Hunter was relieved to hear him say that. Back on the base they thought he was crazy to want to leave and get on a ship. “I am sure we will, Captain.”

"Have you figured out how much time you are going to spend on the bridge?" Steven asked, knowing that his chief of security, would only have one assigned shift a day, and not even a full day. His responsibilities were mainly below decks.

“One shift,” Hunter informed him. “Four to six hours depending on what is happening on the ship and with my officers.”

"Four AM? Some one is being nice to his crew. I would suggest 080 hours." Steven suggested to Hunter. The call was his, but he thought it was to early.

“Four to six hours on the bridge,” Hunter said with a smile. He hadn’t said four in the morning but four to six hours, the captain must have misunderstood him. “I was thinking from eight hundred until twelve hundred, Sir.”

"That would be suitable, just be flexible, if we need you to be." Steven suggested to Hunter.

“I understand, Captain,” Hunter replied with a nod. “I plan that as my base schedule but I’m willing to change whenever needed. We are a team.”

"Glad to hear it. I know you will make a fine addition to the crew." Steven said, as the scene starts to fade away.

Hunter was glad he had had this opportunity to speak with the captain. They had spoken about things he was concerned about and it made him feel better about his transfer here.
