Steven grinned, as he watched his wife enter the room. Right behind her was Lucas, their son. They both quickly took a seat. "How has your day been so far?" Steven asked.

“Good!” Ella said with a smile. “I handed out my expectations to the students and their work assignments.”

“I’m the most unpopular person on the ship.” Lucas sighed. Did she really have to give them homework on the first day.

"Why do you say that?" Steven asked. Was it because M gave them home work? Was it because his dad is the Captain? Was it both?

“First day of school and we have homework.” Lucas explained. “Bunch of the kids wanted to hang out so we can get to know each other.”

"If you feel is unjust you can always file complaint with the second officer." Steven said jokingly. He made a teacher assigning homework will not be a proper grievance.

Lucas sighed. “Not funny, Dad!” He sat back in his chair.

“You won’t have homework every day.” Ella said quietly. “There will be other nights.” She almost laughed remembering how the little things seemed huge when your a kid.

"So you have a villan mom and wouldbe super hero dad, I could get use to that!" Steven said in a big teasing grin on his face.

Ella shook her head and smiled. Lucas would get over this. “What if we had a party for you and your friends?”

“Sorry, Mom.” Lucas replied. “No one wants to hang out at the teachers house but it was a good idea.” He grinned at his dad. “Which super hero?”

"Depends what kind you want me to be." Steven said, as she grinned at his wife. For once he was not the bad guy.

“I kind of like Captain America.” Lucas replied. “What do you think?”

“I think you two need some help.” Ella said shaking her head.

"Captain America?" Steven said, with a big grin on his face. Not a bad choice he thought.

“Yes!” Lucas nodded, already forgetting he was supposed to be mad. “He is honest and brave. He isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes in even if he stands alone.”

Ella wasn’t going to ask him who he saw her as it would probably be someone like the Squirrel Girl or whatever her name was.

"He has alot of good traits, that is true." Steven simply said. It was not his first choice.

“He reminds me of you.” Lucas said. “And he’s my favorite. The others don’t think before they swing.”

"I'm not sure how, but thanks. I think." Steven suggested with a big grin on his face.

Lucas smiled. “It is a good thing Dad.” He took a drink from his glass.

“How did your day go?” Ella asked her husband. “So far it had been all about them.

Steven just stared at Lucas, he was still not convinced. When he heard his wife's question. He glanced over at her, and answered. "Pretty eventful. We managed to keep the ship together." Steven said with a big grin. He was tempting to be humerous. The truth, another boring dull day in deep space.

“I hope so.” Ella said with a smile. “We should have some of your staff for dinner, I would like to meet them.”

“On a night I am busy.” Lucas said, half kidding. He found that usually they were boring for him.

"What do you mean?" Steven asked as he looked to Lucas. What was the boy talking about?

“If your going to have your crew come for dinner.” Lucas said to his dad. “It’s boring I can find something to do.”

"Plenty of time to be bored, just not that night." Steven suggested with a big grin on his face.

Lucas rolled his eyes and looked at his mother. “Mom! Help me out here!”

Ella smiled, thinking she was the bad parent just a few minutes ago. “Having someone over for dinner is so they can meet us as a family. You are a part of this family.” She looked to Steven. “Right?”

"Why don't you want to meet the senior staff?" Steven asked, a little surprised that Lucas was not curious about them. They were only a few years older than him.

“I do if we can talk about stuff that interests me.” Lucas replied. “Like engineering.”

Ella had not seen that coming. “You are interested in being an engineer?”

“Yes.” Lucas nodded. “I have been for a while I just didn’t say anything before now.”

"Wasn't he interested in being a doctor last week?" Steven asked, thinking his son had yet to make a decision. Every division in Starfleet seemed to appeal to him. Well in the eyes of Steven, that appeared to be the case.

“He was.” Ella said with a nod. She looked at Lucas. “And last month it was security.”

Lucas didn’t say a word. Maybe they were right but he was irritated for them calling him out about it.

"Having dinner with all the department heads could be beneficial in you making up your decision." Steven suggested to him.

“How many times did you change your mind, Dad?” Lucas asked him. “When you were on Vulcan did you want to be a scientist?” He took a deep breath. “I like engineering, Hunter says that the engines purr for him and nothing is se…makes him happier.”

"To man times to count, drove your grandpa and grandma insane. Every week it was a new love, a new passion. At one point I wanted to be a senator." Steven pointed out to his son Lucas. Was it possible, he found his calling. Maybe, but probably not.

“That sounds boring.” Lucas said. “I’m glad you changed your mind.”

“I think your father would have made a good senator but this is his calling.” Ella said with a smile.

"your mother is to kind, but she is right this is my calling." He said with a big grin.

“That’s what I want too.” Lucas said seriously. “I just have to decide my path along the way.”

“Which is why you should meet the crew.” Ella smiled. “We will even invite this Hunter you mentioned.”

"Ensign Hunter Mitchell, he is one of the my junior engineering officers." Steven said to Ella with a big grin on his face.

Ella smiled slightly. “I want to know what he is teaching our son about engineering.” She was a bit concerned Lucas might be hearing tall tales.”

“He said it’s not for the weak of heart.” Lucas spoke up. “I’d have to do real good in school, plus it’s hard work and the whole ship would depend on me.”

"That could be true of every position but engineers have one major flaw. There engines are there first love. Even over women." Steven pointed out to his son.

“I don’t care about girls.” Lucas declared. “I’m talkin’ about my future.”

Ella smiled at him. “Trust me. A girl will be a big part of it.”

"The girl will be the engines, if you become an engineer. Hopefully your future girlfriend will understand she will be #2 in your life, if you go that route." Steven pointed out to him.

“Girls don’t care about being second?” Lucas shook his head. “All the girls I’ve met are bossy and demanding.”

“Wait until your a little older.” Ella said with a smile. “That will change.”

Steven knew to keep his mouth silent, as he listened in with a big grin.

“No it won’t.” Stephen shook his head. “I want to have my career set before I get involved with anyone. Girls have so much drama!”

Ella looked from Lucas to her husband. “What is the grin for?” She asked him .

"I am enjoying this conversation." Steven said, he purposely vague with his response.

“We shall see how much you enjoy it.” Ella said with a look. “Later.”

“Drama.” Lucas said with a grin, his eyes lighting up.

"Being a Captain has it's perk, my boy." Steven suggested to him. Then he winked at Ella.

“You are not my captain.” Ella reminded him with a smile. “When we are here.”

Lucas laughed. “Uh oh, Dad.”

"This is my ship my love." Steven said with a big grin.

“It may be your ship.” Ella replied. “But these are our quarters and our marriage. Therefore unless we are in an emergency we are equal”.

"I'm always the captain, however your in luck. I don't mind you taking some pressure off my plate " Steven suggested to her.

“That is what I want.” Ella murmured. “To give you one place where you can relax and take your captain hat off for a bit.”

"That does not sound to bad." Steven said, with a loving grin.

Ella smiled back at him. “It should be a good thing. That is my purpose in it.”

"What about him." Steven said, as he looked over to Lucas and then over at Ella.

“Don’t drag me into this!“ Lucas shook his head. “You already got me coming to boring dinners with your crew.”

“You are always in charge of Lucas.” Ella smiled. “It comes with the territory.”

"We are, lets make that clear." Steven countered his lovely wife.

Ella smiled. “Of course we are.” She smiled at Stephen. “I was referring to you simply based on our conversation.”

"Then dont conuse the boy saying its only me." Steven said to his wife.

“Lucas knows he needs to listen to both of us.” Ella replied. “He isn’t that fond of being grounded.”

“I am sitting right here.” Lucas sighed. “I can hear you.”

"I think that is the point, my son." Steven said, as he looked to Lucas.

“Since I already know that.” Lucas said with a shrug. “What is the point?” He thought parents were weird.

"I'll let your mom get this one." Steven said with a big grin.

“That you remember that your father and I make the decisions.” Ella said with a smile. “And we know what is best for you.”

Steven just snickered at her comment. "She has a valid point." He mentioned to Lucas.

“It doesn’t mean I have to like it.” Lucas replied with a sigh. “I just have to listen.”

"He is a quick one." Steven said, feeling very proud.

Ella nodded in agreement. “He gets that from me.”

"So your taking all the glory huh?" Steven asked playfully.

“Why not?” Ella grinned back at him. “Strike while the iron is hot they say.”

"No, I am taking some of that glory too." Steven suggested to Ella.

“Then all the qualities that make Lucas are shared by both of us.” Ella said with a smile. “Even the less popular ones.”

“Less popular?” Lucas crossed his arms over his chest. “That sounds like something you might say, Dad.”

"Your right, it is something I would say." Steven said agreeing with his son.

“What does that mean?” Lucas asked. “Less popular?”

"I'll let your cool hip mom tell you that one." Steven said with a big teasing grin on his face.

“Your father uses that term when he means those traits that you will grow out of as you mature.” Ella explained.

“Like what, Dad?” Lucas’ eyes went to his father. “And don’t defer to Mom.”

"What is hard about understanding less popular decisions or choices. It's pretty self explanatory." Steven counter pointed out to his son.

Lucas rolled his eyes. “I know what I believe to be poor decisions but your bar is way higher than mine. I am a kid.”

"Then you get it. And as Captain, yes I set the bar pretty high. But you are also my son. So I set the bar even higher." Steven suggested to him.

“It kind of stinks.” Lucas said with a sigh. “But I know it’s because you think it will make me a better person.”

“He gets his intelligence from me.” Ella said with a grin.

"In part, perhaps. But I did not make captain, for no reason." Steven suggested to his lovely wife.

“You we’re meant to be a captain.” Ella smiled at him. “Lucas is the best of both is us.”

“With some less popular decisions.” Lucas added with a smile. “I am certain I learned from the two of you.”

Steven grinned as the scene starts to fade away. He agreed with everything that Ella said.

Ella looked over at Lucas and smiled to herself as her eyes then met Steven’s.
